V.O.B. - Architecture: Frank Gehry withdraws From Jerusalem's Museum Of Tolerance Project

frank gehry withdraws from jerusalem's museum of tolerance project

canadian architect frank gehry will not design jerusalem’s museum of tolerance .
the museum of tolerance is slated to be built on a parking lot that was once part of an
ancient muslim cemetery.

the LA-based simon wiesenthal center, which is overseeing the planning of
the 150 million USD museum, also released a statement to tablet via e-mail that seems
to confirm gehry's assertion, saying that the decision to go with someone other than
gehry was made 'to reflect today’s world economic realities.'

this is not the first time that gehry has been unable to see a big-profile project come to fruition:
the architect’s design for the controversial atlantic yards project in brooklyn was dropped
last june and is now being designed by ellerbe becket and shop architects.

V.O.B. - Architecture: The Cloud

the cloud

the cloud is a concept design for a new form of observation deck created for the city of london.
the project was developed by a multi-disciplinary team that brings together designers and thinkers from
all over the world. the design is about ‘connecting visitors to both the whole of london and the whole of
the world, immersing them in euphoric gusts of weather and digital data’. while just a concept, the design
aims to be a monument for the upcoming olympics in 2012. the cloud proposes a new form of monument
that is both physical and digital. ‘the structure is comprised of a filigree central array of columns –
servicing as circulation systems dropping from the sky like the tendrils of a banyan tree system. each
individual footstep on the ascent to the cloud participates in a vast collective energy-harvesting effort’
that would power LED lights at the top of the design that can display images of messages.

the 'water cube' is MVRDV's proposal for the yeosu expo 2012 thematic pavilion in korea.
the design interprets the expo's focus on the power and beauty of the oceans by 'extracting
a block from the ocean'. a hollow block is enclosed by walls made of stacked water basins
which allow visitors to explore the wonders of the ocean.
