April 2011 marks the completion of "Metropol Parasol", the Redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnacíon in Seville, Spain. Designed by Berlin-based J. MAYER H. architects, this project has already become the new landmark for Seville, a place of identification and to articulate Seville's role as one of the world´s most fascinating cultural destinations.

J. MAYER H. architects had won the 1st Prize in the international design competition for the plaza redevlopment back in 2004.

Project Description from the Architects:

"Metropol Parasol" explores the potential of the Plaza de la Encarnacion to become the new contemporary urban center. Its role as a unique urban space within the dense fabric of the medieval inner city of Seville allows for a great variety of activities such as memory, leisure and commerce. A highly developed infrastructure helps to activate the square, making it an attractive destination for tourists and locals alike.

The "Metropol Parasol" scheme with its impressive timber structures offers an archaeological museum, a farmers market, an elevated plaza, multiple bars and restaurants underneath and inside the parasols, as well as a panorama terrace on the very top of the parasols.

Realized as one of the largest and most innovative bonded timber-constructions with a polyurethane coating, the parasols grow out of the archaeological excavation site into a contemporary landmark, defining a unique relationship between the historical and the contemporary city.

"Metropol Parasols" mix-used character initiates a dynamic development for culture and commerce in the heart of Seville and beyond.

The German company is comprised of a conceptual design team and skilled craftsmen who search for simplicity and the removal of everything unessential which has resulted in the creation of functional and visually uncomplicated products.

Hoerboard has recently released their latest piece of furniture called Scomber Mix Set up Technics 1210. The Scomber is designed to make all your turntables, CD-players and mixers fit perfectly into a great looking workstation. The piece is made from CNC-machined MDF material and is fixed to a laser-cut powder-coated steel support, finished with high gloss coats of various colors.

On top of a sleek and minimalist design, the Scomber wants to keep the clutter out of sight by placing all connections underneath the desk and concealing all power cables inside the stand. The starting price is around $3000 and will go up depending on customizations and accessories.

featuring a double-height layout, the ground floor accommodates a design showroom. the display concept,
which was also created by jacob + macfarlane architects, was developed as an extrapolation of the 'orange cube's
architectural language. taking the treatment of the facade, a three-dimensional volume was generated for an
L-shaped wall that wraps around the space. sixty 'alvéoles' are used to display furniture pieces,
while the unit as a whole define the circulation of the floor.

World renowned artist Zaha Hadid recently completed a school in Brixton, south London that features a bright red running track that flows right through it. Designed for ARK Education, the Evelyn Grace Academy is organized into four smaller schools that share outdoor spaces and facilities.

The Academy offers a learning environment that engages students actively. Playgrounds and sports pitches surround the building, while oblique lines stride across the elevations of the structure, veering into curves around the corners.

The structure allows maximum levels of natural light and ventilation to enter. This collective space, shared by all the schools, encourages social communication and interaction.

The large public space framed by the block is formed into three valleys inspired by a poem of Du Fu (713-770). In some of the porous openings chunks of different buildings are inserted. Our micro urban strategy will create a new terrain of public space; an urban terrace on the metropolitan scale of Rockefeller Center. This new terrain is sculpted by stone steps and ramps with large pools that spill into stepped fountains. Trees, plantings and benches are flanked with cafes. Roof gardens are cultivated through their individual connections to hotel cafes.

At the shop fronts there will be luminous color, neon, backlit color transparency. Like the wash of color that suddenly appears in the great black and white films by Andrei Tarkovsky. The aim for the Sliced Porosity Block is to form new public space and to realize new levels of green construction in Chengdu. The complex is heated and cooled geothermally by 400 wells. The large podium ponds harvest recycled rainwater with natural grasses and lily pads creating a cooling effect.

Unsangdong Architects shared with us their 1st prize winning project “Culture Forest”, a Culture & Art Center located in SeongDong-gu, Republic of Korea. The project is expected to be completed next year. More images and architect’s description after the break.

Forest lets us experience nature, heals our soul and mind, and makes us dream of a new future. In a forest, natural substances such as air, trees, water, soil and wind do not exist separately. The natural substances in a forest are linked together. Since forests provide a beautiful voice and stunning experiences, many people are amused with the harmony of forests and moon over the space of forests. The scenery looking at Seongdong will be as opened as possible, providing a landscape of intensive and storytelling experience. By planning eco-friendly architecture, the new cultural space will become a dreaming space. Each program consists of an eco friendly and creative cultural space by floating rest, events and green area. The space skin of culture will unify architecture and nature through green walls and generates energy by solar powered panel skin.

The flying theater has a unique and creative form. By geometrical patterns and forms of nature, the skin inside is a logical space for the sound. The entire space of the theater will be filled with dark wine color.

By using the crack of the inside skin, the lighting will become atypical and organic, suggestion an attractive theater space connecting reality, ideal and dream.

The walkway around the building naturally connects each program and becomes an intensive cultural street, converting from inside to outside and outside to inside. In order to become a sustainable culture space, the space should get over the basic rules. A multi culture complex is suggested to actively realize the needs of residents. Becoming a multi cultural facility that provides eco-friendly and healthy cultural living, Culture Forest will create various library programs for residents such as concerts, women’s culture and children playing area and become a landmark with beautiful culture, future-oriented dreams and passion of SeongDong.

We know a thing or two about luxury yachts here at TheCoolist, so naturally we were floored when we found the Art of Kinetik Hedonist Yacht. This 63-foot motoryacht can cruise at speeds up to 40 knots, doing so in nearly unparalleled style. The exterior is cloaked in fine mahogany with glass and metal accents, while the interior is as refined and detailed as a luxury hotel. Hedonist is powered by a set of Rolls Royce water jets, enough to hit that claim of 40 knots as mentioned above. While we’ve covered quite a few motoryachts here on TheCoolist, the Art of Kinetik Hedonist is clearly our favorite of the day.

UNStudio shared their new pavilion for the 29th Art Biennale in Sao Paulo, Brazil with us. The project is intended to encourage interaction between the participants and visitors by creating a place for display, discussion, and debate. An artistic expression that also functions programmatically, the pavilion embodies the dynamic geometry and spatial qualities common in the firm’s work (to compare, be sure to check out UNStudio’s New Amsterdam Pavilon or the Burnham Pavilion previously featured on AD).

The exhibition includes a total of six ‘terrieros’ which form a circulation route across the display spaces. Visitors “find themselves traveling through spaces of expression, interpretation, and contemplation. These dynamic movements are formalized and transcribed into a design model, which in turn creates a dynamic space through the convergence of path and destination.”

The Youturn Pavilion examines the contrast between providing a space for solitude as well as a space of interaction by layering geometries to create a simple circle which sits within the more rigid exterior triangle. The centripetal movement and form of the structure wraps and encircles the users from the surrounding biennale, while simultaneously creating a central void; the focal point where all lines, surfaces and viewpoints converge. Ben van Berkel commented, “We wanted to create an environment in which more can take place than simply experiencing the object itself. The object can then also become a dialogue machine.”

Porsche Design has just unveiled their latest advent calendar which will be sold for 1 Million USD each and just a single piece per continent will be available.

The world’s most expensive advent calendar measures 1.75 meters in height and is made from brushed aluminum with double-coat finish surfaces.

The advent calendar conceals three special highlights: a Porsche Design P’6910 Indicator in rosé gold, an individually customisable Porsche Design Kitchen P’7340 and a motor yacht, eight and a half metres long.

Behind the calendar’s 24 windows many other highlights by Porsche Design are hidden.

These include sunglasses made of 18 carat yellow gold, writing tools and cufflinks.

A limited edition leather blouson made from hand-woven lambskin nappa, as well as a travel assortment from the French Classic luggage series are also on the list.

The calendars, strictly limited to five in number, are available on request via the worldwide Porsche Design Stores.

Jason Hawkes likes to see the world from a different perspective - from above. In college, all he wanted to be was a studio photographer, but all that changed after a flight in a small aircraft. "I realized that, with a little attitude, you see all these amazing patterns - even mundane things look intriguing," said Hawkes.

The British photographer spent 15 weeks using state of the art technology to create these dramatic shots for his new book, New York At Night.

"The images of New York were shot on Nikons latest camera, the D3S, using three gyro stabilizing mounts and flown using twin star helicopters. We flew from heights of just over 500 ft up to 2,500-ft with no doors on, it was very very cold."

The Great Trident has officially revealed its new roadster ahead of the Paris Motor Show next month. The Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale gives the famed GT a refreshed appearance and a heartier heartbeat, claiming its place at the peak of the GranTurismo pyramid. The MC Stradale version of the GranTurismo receives a power boost to 450 hp, a slight upgrade over the S model but enough for some added kick on the concrete. While Maserati is holding the performance numbers close to their chest, they did suggest that the new GranTurismo MC Stradale will break the 300km/h barrier (186mph on American roads), putting into a class nearing supercar territory. As a brand, Maserati errs toward luxury over performance, but the MC Stradale may just push their values into a central balance. 186mph with Maserati looks is certainly nothing to sneeze at… Look for more on the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale at the Paris Motor Show 2010 starting on October 2nd.

Musician Pharrell Williams is the cover story for the first issue of London based publication ROLLACOASTER. Shot by photographer Kenneth Cappello and styled by Way Perry, Writer James McMahon caught up with the man who seems to have his hands in virtually everything from music to fashion to producing animated movies such as this years Despicable Me. The article didn’t ask the general questions that most fans inquire about, but rather touched on topics such as Williams decision to remove most of his tattoo’s “It’s much, much worse taking them off than putting them on. They literally zap the ink out of you, they break the ink. I’m speaking figuratively of course…” his views on U.S. President Barack Obama “You have to remember that the guy had more on his desk than any US President ever. Obama’s had some shortcomings, but he’s done something that nobody has been able to do in 60 years and that’s reform healthcare” and the psychology behind the iPhone phenom. Skateboard P proves he is more than just the guy that throws up the Star Trek sign, but a musician whose perspective is far beyond that of the entertainment industry. ROLLACOASTER Issue No. 1 will launch tomorrow at MAN day of London Fashion Week and copies will be available through Somerset House, various other show points around London and also BBC/Ice Cream UK stockists.

Here’s how to make some cash: Take one Etch A Sketch ($18), rip out its guts and call it an iPad case. Now, sell it for $39. You just made $21, and you still have a snuff of magnetic-dust left over.

This is what case-maker Headcase is up to, kinda. The Etch A Sketch iPad case is officially licensed from the Ohio Art Company, but it is made to fit the iPad, which is roughly an inch smaller than the Etch A Sketch in length and width, and half an inch thinner. You also get cutouts for the home button and the ambient light sensor (not that the sensor really works so well anyway).

There are more holes around the sides and underneath you’ll discover a pair of kickstands to make typing a little easier. Given that the white knobs on the front do nothing, taking this setup to the coffee-shop and getting some writing done is probably the most fun you can have with this toy. And it is a toy. Take another look at the back (click the thumbnail with the big Apple logo in it, below) and you’ll see it is just as veined and plasticky as any kids’ toy of today.

Still, it’s hard not to love it: It is an Etch A Sketch, after all.

German luxo-tuners Mansory have added another beast to an already-impressive stable that includes Bentley, Ferrari, and Aston Martin, among others. The primary focus of Mansory is not on performance but rather aesthetics, resulting in the not-so-subtle look you see here. Mansory’s prior works have always been conversation pieces, with feedback ranging from superb (“Mansory…has beaten Rolls-Royce at its own game”) to subpar (their Panamera was described by Evo as the most tastelessly modified vehicle the publication had ever seen). The Gran Tourismo, Maserati’s most masterful creation to date, has received the full treatment, with swaths of carbon fiber wrapped around the front and rear valences as well as the grille and duct trim. Planted at each corner are custom color-matched wheels, which sit a little closer to the wheel wells thanks to a lower ride height. This one-off Gran Tourismo does get a 30-horsepower bump, but we doubt that will be the first thing on people’s minds when they see it. While their may be a lot of arguments about the true beauty of such a vehicle, it’s tough to dispute the craftsmanship from Mansory.

Located in Weil am Rhein, Germany; Vitrahaus is the super-chic showroom of Swiss/German design giant Vitra. Swiss architects Herzoh & de Meuron, also responsible for Munich’s Allianz Arena, came up with the “houses stacked on top of houses” design. The unique layer of noise underlying electronic music is represented by a
random placement of fractals that run underneath the vehicle. Like bass in a song, some elements are poking out into the exterior. These fractals would also capture the noise and vibration from the road and convert them into energy that can assist with the onboard electronics. The unique sound this electric vehicle makes sound leak out through the wheels. The concept is a mixture between the recognizable and the alien.

Netherlands-based Hoogte Twee Architecten shared with us their project B(h)uis, a small pavilion built with PVC tubes. More images and architect’s description after the break.

“Through the centuries architects have used small construction works to experiment with spaces of limited form, scale and extent, but also to experiment with material and details.

As there’s a lack of well-equipped research laboratories, the research of material by architects focuses on potentials of existing (construction-) products in which mainly is sought for possibilities of improper use of materials. Our temporary residence is such an experiment. PVC tubes have inspired us to a design of a special object in which this material is no longer seen as a tube but as a hollow building stone.

The material is researched by its spatial characteristics and escapes its standard application. The transparency in the along-direction and the fixed wall in the cross-direction determine the spatiality.

By parallel stacking of the tubes as building stones a mass has been created which represents itself closed from four sides, but which is transparent, seen from the head sides. By hollowing out this mass a special residence will be created which will be provided by light seen from the head sides.”

Art has a great role in showing what happens in human beings’ life. Soul, intelligence and the emotions are the reflections of the community, and Art forms the social identities of communities. It also shows us the difference between the various social identities. Global influences effect the types of knowledge acquisitions or the social values in the art, and the artists determine the standards of modern life.

Thus, art centers have many roles beside their fundamental functions that should be participant, shared with society and create a modern level in connection between the citizens and the artists’ works. This concept is the key criteria for the Izmir Opera House Project. The project should be reflecting the history, the culture and the modern life in Izmir, furthermore it should be an identity for the city of Izmir.

In this context, we have started to design an urban art dome that we call Artistic Foyer. The urban power effects the functional system, and the functional system defines the artistic foyer. As a result, all these things together create a parametric topography which forming the dome.”

A cascade of chains on the facade, dynamic space, mobile, changing, not what you would expect from a bank, especially in a province at the foot of the Maritime Alps. The branch of this Credit Agency, winner of a closed competition, brings a breath of lightness and a levity that would be more common in a completely different sort of building; an exhibition centre or a performance venue, for example.

This bank is stripped of that entire traditional image which characterises an institution of this type and instead presents a new unedited image of itself.

Surprising and innovative outside, intimate and welcoming inside.

Although made up mainly of young people, the Kuadra studio of architects knows how to obtain the very best from the materials they use with rigor and finesse. Glass, metal and stainless steel are all combined in a clever alchemy that highlights consistency, form, quality and singularity, while never neglecting composition, which remains precise and clean.

The best way to fulfill the needs of the future customers and employees are constantly taken into consideration during the process of the project.

Strips of light, transparent staircases and pathways at different levels mean that clients in this bank will not be limited to cueing at the teller’s counter. They will have an opportunity to experience an architectural quality that Le Corbusier christened Architectural Promenade.

The architecture seems like an ode to clarity, transparency, to conceptual essence itself, while at the same time never losing sight of that direct functional relationship with the public, not just words from a bank worker’s manual, but the real public; an old man, a parent a child, all with differing needs. There is a wide, luminous open informal space given over to a children’s’ play area, quite a novelty in a bank, besides the obligatory comfortable sofas at the entrance. Wherever one goes from the counters to the meeting rooms one is breathing in that atmosphere of ordinary domesticity that never descends into the banal or predictable.

The inclusion of the chains on the façade, 11 linear kilometres, are no mere stylistic or aesthetic pretence, no external second skin. The idea is much more considered. The whole building, changes, shimmers and modifies its physical consistency. The curtain of chains hanging from on high fluctuates lightly letting off a gentle ringing, like Tibetan prayer bells. It captures the light bringing it inside, moulding it, and changing it, thus transforming the massive potentially heavy interior so that the whole building becomes a gigantic semitransparent lamp. In direct sunlight they act as protective sunshades.

Functionality and poetry combined naturally, without being pretentious. The result is surprising.
